Our lineage

A direct line from the source

Not every gym can trace a clean path to the founders of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Ours does. Four links connect your first class to Carlson Gracie himself.

  1. Carlson Gracie

Carlson Gracie Sr. — one of the founding pillars of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu; famous for proving BJJ against all challengers.

  2. Murilo Bustamante

UFC Middleweight Champion. Direct student of Carlson Gracie — one of the most decorated BJJ and MMA competitors in the sport's history.

  3. Master Fabiano Scherner

5th-degree black belt. Multiple IBJJF No-Gi World Champion, UFC & IFL veteran. Founded Chess Lab BJJ to carry this lineage forward.

  4. Chess Lab BJJ

Your gym. Right here in Cottage Grove, Oregon. The same lineage that produced world champions is what you train every time you step on our mat.

For parents

More than martial arts.
Life skills they'll actually use.

Our kids program is built for families, not just fighters. A safe, structured environment where your child can grow — physically, mentally, and socially. Parents are always welcome to watch.

  • Focus & Discipline

Our drills teach kids to listen, stay on task, and follow through — skills that transfer directly into the classroom.

  • Confidence, Not Aggression

Kids who feel capable don't need to prove it. We build the kind of confidence that de-escalates situations before they start.

  • Respect & Teamwork

Every class starts and ends with courtesy. Our kids learn to treat partners, coaches, teachers, and parents with genuine respect.

  • Self-Defense Fundamentals

Real skills — not choreography. Kids learn to protect themselves in age-appropriate ways without becoming a bully.

First time here?

What to expect at your first class

We know walking into a martial arts gym for the first time can feel intimidating. Here's exactly what happens so there are no surprises.

  1. What to wear

Athletic shorts and a t-shirt are perfect. No special gear required for your first visit. No shoes on the mat.

  2. Arrive a little early

Show up 10 minutes before class starts. We'll introduce you to the coach, walk you through the facility, and answer any questions before training begins.

  3. No experience? Good.

Every coach at Madhouse has taught complete beginners. You won't be thrown in the deep end. The class is structured so you can follow along and learn from your very first rep.

  4. Parents can watch

If you're bringing a child, stay as long as you like. We're a community gym and we want families to feel comfortable. Pull up a chair.

  5. Zero pressure

Your free class comes with no sales pitch, no obligation, and no awkward follow-up if it's not for you. We'd rather earn your membership than pressure you into one.
